Queen Kelly - Gloria Swanson and Walter Byron
These days I am reading this great book “Swanson on Swanson”, an autobiography of the great actress that I am enjoying so much. Of course it is written in a way that becomes almost present time, and the details make me want to do some research. One thing I read was something that happened in her life when she was still a little girl, ten years old in fact, and how vividly she remembers in her book that horrible day of October 1909 when a very dangerous hurricane left Key West, (she was living at the army base then) in a very poor condition. Browsing online the site dedicated to the history of Florida (Florida Memory) I have found a few images that evoke those moments after the hurricane and its devastation along Key West.
I will add what she says about it while posting these photos. I was hoping to see a young Gloria by chance, but of course, to no avail. Maybe her mother appears but nobody knows now. Well maybe not.

“In March of our very first year in Key West, however, which was not the season for hurricanes, the sky looked so threatening one morning when the buckboard came to take me to school that Mother said she didn’t want me to go and sent the driver away. Within an hour the gusting wind built to a roar. Outside, the trees were bending and we could see things flying through the air. Then we could hear the ocean washing under the house, and floating logs smashed against the floor with a frightening thud. I screamed for Daddy, even though I knew he was on the base. Mother grabbed me and I clung to her. She held her hands over my ears so I couldn’t hear the awful sounds outside. Water was coming through the floorboards and the roof. We held each other tightly and prayed that the house wouldn’t float away. Suddenly Mother said she heard Daddy’s voice. Then I could hear him too. We saw him holding on to the banister at the top of the stairs, soaked to the skin. The three of us huddled together and waited, as the kitchen chimney came down with a crash. Daddy said we had to stay away from the windows, because roof slates were flying around like feathers. It was afternoon before the wind finally died down and Daddy dared to say he thought the storm was over. Only then did I realize how brave he had been to fight his way to us. He had also been right about our house; it had ridden out the hurricane. We all smiled at each other. We even laughed, and I realized what a joy it is to live through danger and come out safely on the other side.
That freak hurricane was the worst anyone could remember. Church steeples were down, stores were full of sopping merchandise, and the public market was washed completely away. The only thing that had kept us alive, Daddy said, was a cement causeway that had been built by the Florida East Coast Railroad to connect the Florida Keys. It had prevented tidal waves from sweeping over the land.”
Later on she speaks about the evacuation that took place, how school was suspended and that a few days after a boat arrived and both mother and daughter left for sometime to go to New York and then Chicago, to spend some time at the grandparents.
Here is a collection of that disaster that stuck Kew West on October 11 1909.
Then, I waited for the roses to come, and then I looked at the vintage images that took me to my mornings in a Caribbean island where an old lady would explain me the meaning of St. Valentine’s and I would listen mesmerized while she would prepare coffee and milk for us to have with breakfast. And missing the company of my companion I now don’t have to, but yet these memories that are of longing for the beloved one become as well nostalgic and filled with love from friends and acquaintances. I want to include here Tom, if you know what I mean, I remember the “At least Tom loves you” for Valentine’s! :D

Thus I agree that Valentine’s is also a day for friendship, as I miss those times as well. The lovely Valentine’s without my Valentine. Tomorrow I will receive roses, love cards, and we will have a romantic dinner. At last, after all this time, my first Valentine’s as it should be. Happy Valentine’s and Happy Friendship Day!

Here is a collection of images that I loved sharing on a day like today:

e-vint.com

Hans Zatzka, also known as P. Ronsard,Zabateri, Pierre de Ronsard, Joseph Bernard and Bernárd Zatzka, was born March 8, 1859 in Vienna, to a builder and his Viennese actress wife, Hilde Sochor.

Zatzka showed an early interest in painting. From 1877 to 1882 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, studying under Christian Griepenkerl, Karl Wurzinger, and Carl of Blaas. In 1880, at the age of 20, he was awarded the Golden Fügermedal; the golden decoration for services to the city Vienna.

After several trips to Italy, Hans worked in the style of his predecessor, Hans Makart, as a free-lance painter in Vienna, painting ceiling frescoes in stairway houses and residential buildings, numerous murals for altars in churches, and portraits. It was during this time that he developed as special interest in academic genre paintings of idyllic women and cupids.

From these representations, Zatzka turned to painting guardian angel images, elves, sensuous female figures, genre scenes, allegories and other popular motifs. He was a greatly influenced by the operas of Richard Wagner and considered ground-breaking in the production of “bedroom pictures” or “towel format”, a term used to describe a format that fit the low ceiling and cramped spaces. By the 1920′s this style was the size of choice for most European homes.

By the turn of the century, Zatzkas’ pictures turned to picture postcard sales in the galleries of Viennese artists, and ultimately sold to other publishers. In 1906, Zatzka gave precise orders for mass production on a trial basis. By 1914, the first of Hans Zatzkas’ bedroom images were distributed.

Hans Zatzka did not make his living from postcards but from his religious frescoes in churches, altar paintings, and other large commissions such as hospitals in Vienna during the 1920′s. He lived in his home studio, never took in students or teaching jobs and painted until the 80th year of his life.

Hans Zatzka died December 17, 1945.

By 1980, demand for Hans Zatzka paintings in the United States enjoyed great popularity and significantly increased the value of his work. Zatka’s work is now sold internationally in galleries and auction houses, fetching large sums of money. In 2004, Somalia published special stamps with four motifs of images Zatzka: harem dancer, nymphs, spring goddess, and night sky.

Zendahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16400543279822802508noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928523336424083915.post-64826202904135875612012-02-09T11:53:00.001-06:002012-02-09T14:51:01.277-06:00Vintage Medical Advertisements
Classic and Eternal Actor: Ben Gazzara (1930-2012)

Ben Gazzara, image by Corbis

Ben Gazzara, a very well respected actor, a fighter I must say as well, according to what he went through during his lifetime, including depression, and lately cancer, has left us but not the fantastic world of magic and eternity that is the world of films, where his imprint will forever stay as a proof of someone who had always loved his own career, and his fellow actors and actresses. He was born in 1930 and was an avid listener, collecting since his childhood other people’s emotions, and making of him a sponge in regards to expressing situations. He wrote an autobiography, and spoke about his loneliness when he was a child, and his need to be surrounded by people and celebrations. He joined a group of acting students, and the first applause from the audience made him feel the happiest man in the world. Although a good student, after graduating he dedicated his career to acting. He then would continue learning, taking lessons in different studios, including the Actor’s Studio, developing his actor skills and working as such, notably in television, either movies or tv series. His friend John Casssavetes, along with Peter Falk, let Gazzara get involved in the script for Husbands (1970), a film of great success. Since then, the three actors would be involved in other movies. The friendship that sprung while making movies never faded away, and proved that the movie industry doesn’t always have to be lame and cold.

A world traveler, he had a house in Italy, where he lived and loved living in. Italy was his ancestors’ land and he felt at home when living in thee.

In 2005, Ben Gazzara was honored by the San Sebastian Film Award, for his dedication to the film and television industry.

My mother has always loved watching Ben Gazzara acting. In fact it was her who made me know this great actor.

Ben Gazzara, Rest In Peace.

John Cassavetes and Ben Gazzara
Zendahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16400543279822802508noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928523336424083915.post-19623325896152199912012-02-03T11:40:00.001-06:002012-02-03T11:55:38.519-06:00Read Victorian American Books: The Girl’s Own Book 1833

The Girl’s Own Book, 1833

One interesting book, not only for its contents but also for its presentation, design and illustrations is The Girl’s Own Book, written by Lydia Maria Child (1802-1880) and published by Clark Austin & co. in New York in 1833. Much has been said of the way little girls were educated in those times, especially in regards to discipline, but this book takes these little girls from yesteryear to another world, the world of child and play, the world of good behave, the world of occupying the time being creative, skilled and intelligent. By showing games, some of them old enough to be remembered nowadays, which is of great help for parents, educators and simply curious people for all things old, by explaining how to develop skills in art and handcrafting, this book is one of a kind.

Blind Man’s Buff

Here I will include some of the subjects the books presents and I think it can be useful for girls and little boys as well, it is a good book that takes us back in time to the world of nature, laughter and innocence.

The book, as I say, shows games that are now almost forgotten, if not forgotten regarding some of them. It is always a pleasure to rediscover what our ancestors were playing and were happy about.

From the book “A Course of Calisthenics for the use of schools and families”

Some activities include active exercises, mind games, handcrafting and more are: A gaping, wide mouthed, waddling Frog; Alumets; Alphabetical Compliments; Anagrams; On the keeping of Animals; Arithmetical Puzzles; Automata; Bead-Work; Blind Man’s Buff; Bo Peep; Bob Cherry; Calisthenics; Candle Ornaments; Charades; Chinese Boxes, Puzzles and Shadows; Comical Concert, Conundrums, Cries of Paris; Dancing; Didon Dina; Directions to lay Mezzotinto Prints on Glass; Games of Memory; Flying Feather; Hen-Coop; Jumping Rope; La Grace or the Graces….

On Keeping Animals

The list is endless. It also includes two songs with music.

PREFACE

ADDRESSED TO PARENTS

This little book has been compiled with an earnest desire to make it useful, all respects, to its readers; but I have relied on my own judgment and experience: therefore there is little doubt of numerous imperfections.

Perhaps I have erred, in trying to please all; and my thus, like the old man in the fable, succeed in pleasing none. Some will say there is too large a proportion of games; others will smile at the directions for sewing and knitting; some may complain that the frequent recommendation of active exercises will tend to make their children rude and disorderly; others will think too much is said about gracefulness and elegance; some will call the conundrums old, others will say they are silly, and others, that they should have been entirely excluded. I knew I could not avoid numerous criticisms, and, therefore, I did not write with the fear of them before my eyes.

In this land of precarious fortunes, every girl should know how to be useful, amid the universal dissemination of knowledge, every mind should seek to improve itself to the outmost; and in this land of equality, as much time should be devoted to elegant accomplishments, refined taste, and gracefulness of manner, as can possibly be spared from holier and more important duties. In this country it is peculiarly necessary that daughters should be educated as to enable them to fulfill the duties of a humble station, or to dignify and adorn the highest. This is the reason why I have mingled a little of every thing in the Girl’s Own Book.

If the volume proves attractive, a large proportion of the credit must be ascribed to the generosity of the publishers, and the skill and good taste of the artists who have been employed. The drawings of the automata were prepared by Mr. Graeter: to those who have been his pupils, nothing need be said in praise of his spirited and graceful sketching.

Whether my share in the formation of this little book is deserving of popular favor, I am extremely doubtful; I am only sure that it contains nothing to corrupt or mislead.

P.S. No, thanks!
"Guilty" - Mrs. Crane

Mrs. Douglas Crane - I'm guilty on both counts. I wear a slit skirt and I love the tango. I can't see anything wrong in either. As a matter of fact all of this storm raised about the tango is due to ignorance: any dance that has not been seen here before, whether it comes from the Barbay coast or the Y. W. C. A., is called a tango. There is no harm in the slit skirt; the evil is in the mind of the wearer or observer. Neither is the evil in the slit skirt display of leg - or limb as some call it here, though in my country we are not ashamed of the word leg -unless it is made with evil intention or seen with evil thought. One should look at a woman's face and not what she is wearing or dancing to tell what kind of woman she is.

What Judge Dunne Said:

"If you women want to do some good why don't you go out and stop this dancing and sew up the slit skirts?"

In 1909, seventeen year old heiress Roberta Buist DeJanon, grandaughter of wealthy Philadelphia seedman Robert Buist Jr (his father credited with introducing the poinsettia to the United States), and daughter of Ferdinand H. De Janon, disappeared from her house "Bellevue-Stratford" in Philadelphia, with a false intention to visit the dentist. And she disappeared, along with her dog and a 46 year old waiter from Vienna named Frederick Cohen. He had inherited a small fortune from his brother who had emigrated to Australia. Loving horse races, and he lost by spending his one million seven hundred dollars in a short time. He went then to work as a waiter again, this time at the Hotel Birham, and at the Bellevue-Stratford hotel he along with another waiter served the De Janon family, inside their apartments, due to the heiress' mother illness. The heiress' mother had died a month before her run away. After her name appeared on the newspapers' headlines for many days, they both got married, Frederick having divorced from his wife in exchange of valuable items. Later on they would divorce and she would marry Harry Blank Cavendish. As other sources inform as well, she later on married Stephen Glaser, 26 years old, in 1911, after her grandfather had died that same year, which creates a doubt regarding the real name of the so called Cohen, or maybe Cavendish, since the year of her disappearance was 1910. She possibly divorced him in 1930.

The headlines showed different possibilities regarding their whereabouts, including a trip to Mexico.

While disappeared, newspapers asked people to help find the elopes, and some had mentioned they saw him in New York, while others would point at the races in Philadelphia, thus starting a hunt that kept for days making the news on different newspapers, from El Paso until Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, etc. They were searched all along the US, including Canada, until they were found in Chicago.

It seems that she was not the only rich girl to have left home and go ahead with her way, as through reading newspapers regarding this story, another heiress had left her house and had married her chauffeur.

As a note aside, Patrice De Janon, the heiress' grandfather on her paternal side, I discovered to have been a sword-master and Spanish teacher at West Point Military Academy, being himself of Spanish origin and a gentleman. He had a kind of conspiracy against him at the academy, which leaded him to address a long explanation as an Answer and Defense, and asking for help to the President of the United States, then Franklin Pierce published in 1864.

Buist, the father, breakfasted with Roberta, and then went to his club, or about his business, returning at 4 o'clock. Miss Hester (Roberta mother's nurse), remained with the child, but she, too, departed finally.
Cohen and the girl were thrown together. The waiter, tenderly sympathetic toward the girl in her bereavement, used that sympathy as a stepping stone to her affections. He was devoted in his attentions; no youthful lover ever thought by wiser methods to win the object of his affection than Cohen practiced to gain Roberta.
He won. The girl became enamored of him. She wrote letters penned in a childish hand, that, if true, are the strangest love letters ever published. The girl, addressing her lover as "papa", poured out in her simple sentences the whole story of her infatuation for the bald-headed Lothario, who won her regard.
And when Cohen had completed the conquest of that girlish heart he planned the affair that gave the story of the heiress and the waiter to the world. On Christmas day Cohen gave up his position at the Bellevue-Stratford. Not a word did he say to his wife of his action. She believed he was still employed as a waiter.
Three days later, about 9 o'clock in the forenoon, Roberta de Janon went out, presumably to a dentist. Two hours before Cohen had kissed his wife good-by and said he would return to their lodgings at night. Since that time neither was seen until they were captured in Chicago.

NOTE TO FATHER THREATENED SUICIDE.

At first, a private investigation of the family followed the disappearance of the daughter. The reason for this was assigned by the relatives to the discovery of a note in the room of Ferdinand de Janon, which had been written by his daughter, announcing her intention of killing herself, as life held nothing for her since her mother had died.
But the investigation of two days was fruitless. And on Friday, the last day of 1909, the news could no longer be concealed, and the world was given the story of the heiress and the waiter, one of the strangest stories of infatuation that ever proved truth to be stranger than fiction.
To revert to the chronology of the case for a time. The investigation showed that Roberta had not appeared at the dentist's that morning. However, accompanied by Tootsie, her little fox terrier, she went to a department store, made a few purchases and came out without the dog. The man stationed at the store entrance had noticed the dog, and asked her where she had taken the animal. Roberta, in a laughing manner, said she had given the animal to a friend.

TRACED TO PENNY STATION.

From the store, the girl and Cohen were traced to the Broad street station, and for two weeks and a day have been wrapped in a shroud of mystery that has concealed their location as effectually as though they had been engulfed by an earthquake.
That that girl had plotted to leave with Cohen, was shown in her actions previous to her disappearance. For days past she had been purchasing articles such as a person would need who was to travel. A dozen under-vests, various other articles of lingerie, a traveling clock, a traveling case, heaps of articles upon which women dote had been purchased by her, and charged to her grandfather's account. But on the day she went to the department store, the day that she disappeared, Roberta didn't purchase anything.
When Cohen and the heiress went away, attention was called to the third side of the inevitable triangle: MRS. COHEN.
Nature had indeed cast the injured wife in a peculiar mold. She was informed of her husband's perfidy, and the tale she wove about the erring spouse and the girl, discounted in its absorbing, not to mention its peculiar interest even the story of the love of December and May.

MRS. COHEN SHOWS NOTES FROM GIRL.
When the detectives went to Mrs. Cohen she first pulled out bundles of notes and photographs and silently handed them to the officers. When the astonished detectives saw the contents they were puzzled. For the letters were those of Roberta de Janon to the waiter, the photographs were those of the girl taken in various poses, exactly the style of photograph that a lovelorn maiden would send to her suitor.
"How did you get these?" asked one of the detectives.
And then came the story. Mrs. Cohen, with a lifeless voice, a voice that carried none of the emotion which she afterward showed she felt, told them that she knew of the girl's infatuation for her husband.
Intimate details of the progress of the strange attachment of the heiress for the waiter she related and then, breaking into a vigorous recital, said that her husband had told her all about the affair.

OFTEN SPOKE OF THE GIRL.
"Fred often told me of the girl who was in love with him," she added. "He showed me the notes that he received, he showed me the photographs that she had given him, he told me all about it. He never kept their relations secret from me, and he always spoke of loving Roberta and that they would elope some time. That time was when he was ready to go."
With this amazing declaration finished, Mrs. Cohen was asked why she hadn't informed the relatives of the girl, why she had not left her husband or separated from him or, in any event, stopped this affair. Her answer to the first question was that she did not wish her husband to lose his position at the hotel. To the second she answered that her religion would not permit of a divorce, and in regard to a separation she said she loved her husband and would cling to him through everything.
To the last question came the strangest reply of all. Mrs. Cohen said the reason why she did not stop the affair existing between her husband and the heiress was because she never feared that she would lose him, and felt that in the strength of his love for her she had a shiled and bulwark that would prevail against the shafts of love directed by Roberta.
Hardly had she concluded this remarkable tale, when immediately she became excited and started to revile her husband. She would unmask him as a villain, follow him to "hell" if necessary and bring down upon him the righteous punishment he deserved. The girl's punishment she would leave to heaven, she said. Started on this theme, she railed against her errant spouse and gave the detectives the impression that her misfortune and desertion had mentally unbalanced her. For weeks the search for the waiter and the heiress was continued. The newspapers were filled with accounts of it. But they had covered their tracks well, and though the detectives thought they had several clews from time to time, nothing definite developed until the proprietress of the Chicago boarding house, suspecting who her lodgers were through pictures of them she had seen in the papers, notified the police. Thus was Roberta de Janon restored to the arms of her forgiving grandfather, who throughout the hunt had not faltered in his determination to find her.
